memorialists of the community and, finally, the academic literature. This tour of
key pieces of the literature on this specific immigration case shows that this
institution has been poorly addressed by specialists. We try to identify lines of
          approach and some problematic nuclei.

Andrea Ortea. "Construir LIEBIG: un pueblo industrial en Entre Ríos. Origen
alemán de un emprendimiento inglés" (Constructing LIEBIG – an industrial village
in Entre Ríos – the German origins of a British Enterprise). This paper explores
the history of Liebig's Company in South America in the mid-nineteenth century,
revealing its German origins. Justus von Liebig founded it, the engineer Georg
Giebert started the canned meat factory, the banker Otto Gunther invested his
capital, and everyone won by virtue of their collaboration.
In an effort to produce food, they applied their knowledge to install three
canned meat factories in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, where the primary
industry was farming and raising cattle. They created company towns and a
whole community around working with meat, thereby creating an engine of
growth for the local, regional and international economy.

Regula Rohland de Langbehn. "La trayectoria centenaria de la Sociedad Ale-
mana de Beneficencia (DWG)". (One Hundred Years of the German Beneficence
Society [DWG]). The German Beneficence Society was founded in Buenos Aires
in 1916, because many Germans had lost their jobs or their clients during the
First World War in Europe. During the war it provided important services, and
new challenges were created after 1920 by massive immigration. During the
thirties, in a problematic development for Argentina, the Society was aided by
National Socialists. It ran several homes and administered others. In 1955, when
the proprieties that had been confiscated after the Second World War were
returned to the DWG, the organization began to work from a headquarters in
Belgrano, and slowly it renovated the the Gereatric Home Los Pinos in Talar de
Pacheco, until in 1990 it moved its activities to the new location. For several
decades the DWG helped gather money from Germans and held fundraisers for
the Lepra-aid in Argentina. Presently, it focuses on the Geriatric Los Pinos and
social aid. The current inhabitants stay there at the cost of living, only very few
free places or financial assistance for living there are granted.

Pedro N. Sadler. "Asociación Filantrópica Israelita (AFI)" (The Philanthropic Isra-
elite Assotiation). This paper on the Asociación Filantrópica Israelita begins by
referring to the situation of the Jews in Europe, next discussing then the German
Jews who were living in Argentina before the Nazi persecution, and then the
beginning of immigration of those driven from Europe. The article details the
immediate response of the existing community, their first helping actions, and
how this led to the founding of the Hilfsverein deutschsprechender Juden (Phil-
anthropic Association of German-Speaking Jews), which later on took the name
Asociación Filantrópica Israelita. The essay narrates the story of this association,
including its most important accomplishments until today. The author remembers
his family and personal experiences, which he depicts from a historical perspec-
tive as representative for the German Jew Community in Argentina.
