the American Guild for German Cultural Freedom. Follos a escription of the

           lated texts.

           The texts
The volume comprises five texts by Ruez, of which two are simply auto-
biographical, namely the letters to the American Guild for German Cultural
Freedom and an extract of the Familienchronik (Family chronicle). A third
text is a narrative with an autobiographical background (“Aller Anfang ist
schwer” - All Beginnings are Difficult”), and two more are short essays on
healthcare, about medicinal baths in La Pampa and hygiene in Misiones.
This is a very small selection of Ruez’s approximately twenty essays on
medical and anthropological themes. The volume omits the anthropological
essays, both since there is a recent study on his writings on the La Pampa
region (Lazzari & Nigg 2020) and because there is an extensive scholarly
project underway about his contact with Indians in Misiones (Cebolla Badie
& Gallero). Beatriz Romero translated four of the texts. The letters to the
American Guild as well as the Familienchronik seem to be a reliable source
of facts, but the intermittent entries in the “chronicle” skip over many im-
portant incidents in the writer’s life. The narrative text discusses the years
which have been selected from the chronicle to provide a basis for compa-
rison (Hans Knoll examines this topic in the present volume).
Key words: translation - selection of texts - autobiography - hygiene
           - ethnology.
